The Environmental Youth Alliance ( EYA ) , with partners, launched in late September2007 at the Future In Our Hands meeting at the United Nations, Winds of Change...Protecting Urban Forests.
The program is a response to the destruction in Stanley Park, Vancouver 2005 of a major windstorm.
The storm destroyed 10,000 trees...45 hectares of trees gone out of a total park size of 243 hectares. The total cost of restoration is estimated at $9,000,000. The damage in Stanley Park has acted as a wake-up call to the threats to urban forests from serious weather, possibly attributed to climate change.
EYA has partnered with the Audemars Piguet Foundation of Vancouver and the UN-Habitat Global Partnership Initiative for Urban Youth Development. Winds of Change is an urban climate educational and action program for children and youth involving restoration, workshops, and GIS mapping of key indicators of climate change.
