Mind Shift has been designed by a team of seven high school students working with the HRM Adventure Earth Centre, with the support of Halifax Environmental Services. It specifically addresses outcomes in the ecology and weather components of the grade 10 science curriculum and the spaceship earth unit of the grade 10 geography curriculum.
It uses an experiential and interactive approach to engage young people in understanding humanity's role and impact on the ecosystem while identifying how students can reduce their impact at a personal level.
Mindshift is currently in its pilot phase. It will be offered in 2008-2009 to interested high schools in HRM, and involves the development of peer education teams in the high school. With the support of an interested teacher, a high school team of senior students learns and presents a one hour drama-based performance to the grade 10 science classes.
The presentation involves a humorous and hard-hitting interactive approach in which the classroom is turned into the deck of the Starship Earth with 7 astronauts in command. It also includes a series of dramatic skits of a day in the life of a high school student.
Finally, the presentation ends with a set of activities to help young people identify practical ways to take action in their own lives with respect to the 4Rs and/or generate positive ideas waste management and environmental projects in their school or community. A resource kit of ideas is provided to teachers to assist the class in identifying and acting on the ideas.
